A Rock Rapids, Iowa, man is being charged with a Minnesota crime for the fifth time in 2009, leaving him with pending criminal counts in three different counties for a variety of separate incidents.

Jonathan Carlos Wood, 31, is now facing charges of check forgery, offering a forged check, possession of stolen checks and theft by check in Nobles County District Court.

In March, Wood was charged in Nobles County with theft by check, theft by swindle and offering a forged check. Those charges stemmed from an accusation that Wood stole a check from an elderly woman, used it to buy a large flat panel TV in her name, then traded the TV in at another store for a smaller set and some cash. While investigating, authorities learned Wood had moved out of his apartment in the middle of the night. The charges are still pending.

In April, Wood was charged with two counts of check forgery in Jackson County District Court. He pleaded guilty to one of those counts in June, and was required to serve 15 days in jail, with two years probation.

Before that sentencing, however, he was charged in Jackson County June 3 with one count of theft by swindle, which is still pending.

In July, Rock County District Court charged Wood with one count of identity theft. Again, that charge is pending.

The latest charges actually stem from a series of checks Wood allegedly wrote in December 2008 and January 2009.

A checkbook and an expired driver's license had been stolen, and the owner thought he had just misplaced the items. The checking account had been dormant since May 2008, the victim told authorities. Then he was informed of a series of overdrafts.
Wood was allegedly identified in a photo lineup as the writer of forged checks in both Dundee and Brewster.

When confronted by law enforcement in June, Wood refused to give a statement.

His next court appearances include an omnibus hearing in Rock County on Aug. 24, a first appearance in Nobles County Sept. 1, an arraignment in Jackson County Sept. 2 and a pre-trial conference in Nobles County in November.
