Post Minneapolis Cops Investigated For Assaulting Arrestee
Pioneer Press:

MINNEAPOLIS The Minneapolis police chief says he will review a video showing six of his officers punching and kicking a 42-year-old man during a traffic stop.

Chief Tim Dolan says he will review on Monday the video of Derryl Jenkins' arrest.

Jenkins was stopped on Feb. 19 in north Minneapolis. He says he had a late-night dinner and three beers at Rudolph's Bar-B-Que and was headed to a friend's house when he was stopped for allegedly speeding.

Jenkins had to have seven stitches above his eye after the six officers punched and kicked him during the incident.

Jenkins was charged with assault and refusing to submit to alcohol tests, but those charges have been dropped.

According to police reports, Jenkins resisted arrest. But Jenkins says the video shows he was the victim of an unprovoked attack.

This was not a pretty video. I suspect that several of the cops involved will be severely disciplined, if not fired and criminally prosecuted. It's not altogether clear exactly what happened. The initial officer says that the arrestee punched him, although that's difficult to see on the video. The officer did have large cuts in his mouth consistent with being punched. In any event, some of the physical damage done by the assisting officers is pretty clearly excessive and unjustified. This will be watched closely, and will no doubt be the subject of a substantial federal lawsuit.
