Citing budget woes and staffing shortages, the Minneapolis PD is closing its Narcotics Unit and reassigning the officers to other duties, Chief Tim Dolan says. Budget cuts are requiring the MPD to get rid of 50 positions in the upcoming year.

This is shocking. Critics of drug laws say that police should stop prosecuting addicts and concentrate their efforts on distributors and big dealers. That's exactly what those people did. All in all, it really just shifts financial responsibility to Hennepin County, the State of Minnesota, and the DEA. In a world of fiscal reality changing, look for more units of government to just walk away from traditional roles and leave others to figure out how to handle them.
