Post Best Minneapolis St Paul Restaurants for a Date

What restaurant would you recommend to a guy who'd like to impress his date by taking her out to dinner?

My choice is Zelo, an Italian restaurant in downtown Minneapolis. It is at the corner of 9th St. and Nicollet Mall.

Everytime I had lunch or dinner there, I always enjoyed it greatly. You can dress up or dress cool. Everything - the bread, the salad, the wine, the entrees, the dessert, the decor and the service - is the best. Tables are well-separated to allow enough privacy. The sound level is comfortable. The menu is very creative. My most favorite entree is the Ahi Tuna with wasabi mashed potato. When making reservation, be sure to ask for window seating. You may get one of the corner tables that gives you and your date a bit more intimacy.

Love to hear everyone else's choice for their favorite restaurants for a date.

Post La Belle Vie

This is a rather upscale French restaurant (510 Groveland Ave., right across the street from the Walker at the Hennepin and Groveland). It is best to dress properly. They don't have a dress code, but I'd say at least business casual for guys. The decor is simple yet elegant. The staff and service were very friendly. We had the 8-course tasting menu. Every course was beautifully presented and tasted great, except only one thing - the sausage that came with the lamb course was too salty for me. But if you like salty sausages, I bet you will love it. It was a great experience and I highly recommend.

Post Melting Pot in Minneapolis

I really don't think it gets much better than Melting Pot in downtown Minneapolis. If you've never had really good fondue, it's absolutely worth every penny. The portions are fantastic and everything is delicious. And the waitstaff understands that a lot of the people who come in really don't know what they're ordering. It's nice an quiet and the perfect spot for a date.

Post Vincent's on Nicollet Mall

I have been to Vincent's 3 times (on Nicollet next to Brit's Pub). The first time was about 3 years ago. I enjoyed the ambiance of the place very much, but the portion of entree was way too tiny. I had a $30 fish entree and the fish was the size of 2 teaspoons. I didn't expect this was an all-you-can-eat, but that portion was a bit unreasonable. The second time I went there was a year ago. A friend and I had the tasting menu. It was GREAT! Then I went back for the third time a few months ago. I noticed the portion size was a lot more than 2 teaspoons - it was very reasonable. Now I really like this place. Very contemporary decor. Great service. I went to the Orchestra Hall for a concert one time. Vincent's had a vendor booth outside selling pastries. The owner/chef Vincent was there too. I would take my date to this place anytime.

Vincent is fantastic. I haven't had any dates there, but I've gone to lunch there a couple times. I've been extremely pleased, if a bit anxious about how much I was spending on lunch.

Post 112 Eatery

This is a new kid on the block in the fine dining scene. It opened a bit over a year ago, but got enough raves already. It was named as "Restaurant of the Year" by the MPLS St Paul magazine (MPLS St Paul magazine has the tendency of overrating mediocre restaurants).

Had dinner there with a friend 2 weeks ago for her birthday. We didn't make a reservation since we were planning to go to Nami for sushi. We arrived at Nami before it was opened, then my friend spotted 112 Eatery across the street. We decided to change the plan. We waited about 15 mins outside the restaurant before it was opened. We got a table by the windows.

They serve mostly American foods. For appetizers, we had duck and radicchio salad and romaine leave salad. For entrees, I had the roasted Ahi tuna with portabella mushroom and my friend had the shrimp entree. Both entrees were beautifully presented and we were wowed. Since I don't care for sweet desert, I didn't have any. My friend had the tres leches cake - she thought that was the best part of the meal.

The place was packed for that evening (Saturday). Some people dressed up, while others dressed very casually, even in shorts and sandels. The overall experience was only enhanced by the great service we had.

I thought it was debatable whether this place deserved "Restaurant of the Year" award, but I have no doubt it is a great place. If you want to impress your date, you won't go wrong. Be sure to make a reservation ahead of time.

PS: location: 112 North 3rd Street, MPLS, MN 55401, website: www.112eatery.com

Post Jax Cafe, Murrays

Call me Old School, but if I'm going to spend some jing, I want great service, atmosphere, and sumptuous food. My votes go to two Minneapolis classics:

Murray's
www.murraysrestaurant.com

and

Jax Cafe, 1928 University Ave NE

Great romantic wood-paneled luxury all around. If you want to convince your date that you're used to the high life and money means nothing to you, check out Ruth's Chris, as reviewed below.

Fuji Ya's in Minneapolis is a great little romantic spot, especially if you reserve one of the zashiki rooms. The happy hour is noisy, but the restaurant is usually quiet. The boyf took me here on one of our first dates.
