First of all, I called Gopher One Call on Monday and asked them to come out and mark the utility lines in Mike's back yard, so we know where everything is and won't do something terrible while expanding the garden. Now we know the lay of the land, and we're talking about how and where we want to expand it. We're at least going to double it, maybe more. We're going to work harder at making an actual plot for next year, planning out what will go where, and leaving enough space between rows for mulch pathways so I can get in there and putz.
We need to order our garlic bulbs soon for fall planting. I should do that today. Other new additions will include asparagus, red onion, potatoes, yams, heirloom tomatoes and possibly carrots. We'll keep everything we had this year with the possible exception of eggplant.
We're going to leave the plants intact for the winter, but probably take the fence down so animals can munch on them. We've been composting all summer, and we've got a vat of rich, dark soil teeming with nutrients that I can't wait to spread on the garden in the spring.
That's all I know. Anyone else have tips or ideas for fall garden prep? This our first time around with all this business...
