Senator Ted Stevens, recently convicted on federal corruption charges, has seen a 4,000 vote swing in a recount of last week's election, and a 3,200 vote lead has changed to an 800 vote margin for his opponent.
The election is more important than the surface issues. If in fact Stevens did gain reelection, but was forced to leave the Senate because of his conviction, it would open the door for Governor Sarah Palin to appoint either herself or a proxy to serve the remainder of his six year term.
