Gay activists are taking action against organizations and individuals who were known to support Proposition 8, constitutionally banning gay marriage in California.

"It's really awful," says Frank Schubert, campaign manager for Yes on Proposition 8. "No matter what you think of Proposition 8, we ought to respect people's right to participate in the political process. It strikes me as quite ironic that a group of people who demand tolerance and who claim to be for civil rights are so willing to be intolerant and trample on other people's civil rights."

So, do others agree with this statement? I don't think it's a violation of civil rights to boycott people and business who supported Proposition 8. It certainly doesn't compare to banning marital rights for homosexual couples.

I doubt that these businesses would place ads in The Advocate or Out, so I think it's pretty equivalent for those who support gay rights to say that they won't be patrons of such businesses.

Seems logical, don't you think?

Don't know, NoMN. Clearly hurling racial epithets at random black people because a large number of them were believed to have voted for Prop 8 is a civil rights violation, and particularly so in light of the fact that the insult hurlers were doing it strictly on the basis of race with no knowledge of the individual's own position on the issue.

Not sure about the rest of it. What would be your reaction to evangelical groups assembling lists of gay people and advocates of gay marriage and publishing them, and urging people to boycott their businesses and force them from their jobs for their political stance and beliefs?

Not necessarily germane, but there has been a recent trend of obtaining the phone numbers and home addresses of publc figures involved in controversial issues and sending protesters and harassing mail and phone traffic directly to them as "punishment" for their stands. That's clearly a step over the line, and in reality is an implied threat. "I know where you live" is one of the most chilling phrases in the English language. Is that the direction that this is going?

Oh, you mean like this?: http://www.advocate.com/print_article_ektid24524.asp

Or this?: http://www.bpnews.net/BPnews.asp?ID=15298

How about this one?: http://www.chicagopride.com/news/article.cfm/articleid/2370100

This is my favorite: http://feminist.org/news/newsbyte/uswirestory.asp?id=9412

All of these links are from a simple Google search of "Focus on the Family boycott". Anti-gay groups have been boycotting businesses and organizations that support gay rights for years.

So, in answer to your question about what my reaction would be? What's good for the goose is good for the gander.

Good point, NoMN. I was vaguely aware of some objections to Disney policies, but not others. I think we would agree that this kind of action is legitimate, but in all cases must end at the workplace and not be extended to invading people's personal lives over different views of policy and law.
