Re: Frequent Flyer Reward Travelers Most Likely Bumped
Cash strapped airlines are pushing nonpaying frequent flyer reward passengers to the back of the line, and they are among the most likely to be bumped on an overbooked plane.
I always buy my own seat and then use miles for class of service upgrades. For the wife and kids, it depends but I'll often buy their seats outright with miles, or if the base price is low buy and then use miles for an upgrade.
I haven't spent miles for a while, but typically I used them for round trip upgrades on the non-stop to Hawaii, one of the best uses of NW miles especially when they had the planes in a "world business class" configuration.
I've got about 200,000 northwest/delta miles on hand right now. I am Gold but haven't flown at all this year.
