It started with a crash.

When Target Corp. began subsidizing the Minnesota Orchestra's kid-friendly family concerts thus making tickets available for free demand was so high that it crashed the box office phone and computer systems at Minneapolis' Orchestra Hall.

So the orchestra rectified the problem by instituting a lottery system. Beginning Wednesday and running through July 29, you can register for free tickets to either the orchestra's Nov. 22 all-American program of works by Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland and others, or its Dec. 5 presentation of highlights from the orchestra's production of Engelbert Humperdinck's opera "Hansel and Gretel." The concerts are presented at 2 and 4 p.m. on each date.

To enter the random drawing, contact the Orchestra Hall box office either in person (1111 Nicollet Mall, Minneapolis), by phone (612-371-5656) or online (minnesotaorchestra.org). Winners will be contacted in late August.

Registration to receive tickets for next season's other family concerts (March 13 and May 19) will take place between Jan. 13 and 20.
