A great rant about Pawlenty's consistent disdain for and systematic destruction of the cultural heart of Minnesota.

If the actions below are his crime, I leave it to the reader to decide for yourselves. Especially in the current budget climate, I think the State of Minnesota will do just fine without a full time poet on the payroll

This is the governor, after all, who in 2005 not only nixed naming a state poet laureate (a proposal requiring zero funding), but smarmily suggested that to do otherwise would spawn “requests for a state mime, interpretive dancer, or potter,” as though the arts were some kind of infectious disease

Did you read the part about the poet laureate requiring zero funding? You know, in the part that you quoted?

You know what? The arts are doing just fine without support from that one house on Summit Avenue. Many of the other houses on that street support the Arts with bucketloads of dollars. And it's just as well that they do. The Rich and their high income lackeys are the biggest consumers of the arts.

The Walker and the Guthrie don't seem to be hurting. Neither does the MIA. Nor the Ordway and Orchestra Hall. Or the Northrop and Weisman.

The State is dealing with SERIOUS budget problems that affect local cities and schools. Let's get that house in order before we make attacks on the governor for his crimes against the blessed Arts.
