Post Whistleblower: Craigslist Scammers

Star Tribune:

Potential renters need to watch out when looking for a place to live using Craigslist, the online classifieds service, readers tell Whistleblower. Kristin Ohnstad recently answered some ďfor rentĒ ads in the Twin Cities, and the less-than-grammatical responses asked for detailed information about her. It was clear that the so-called landlords didnít own the properties.
Here is one passage from the landlord, who just happened to be overseas: "I want to let you know that there is no one there in the state to show you the inside of the house as the keys and all documents of the house are here with us and we shall get it shipped to you via FEDEX Courier Service as soon as you are ready to move in. "
Ohnstad realized what most regular Craigslist users know: the site is swarming with potential swindlers and identity thieves. Craigslist has advice for getting around the scammers ó donít provide any personal information to strangers, donít rent housing unseen and most important, deal only with people you meet in person.
