Speculation continues that the Twins could deal some veterans with expiring contracts like Michael Cuddyer, Jason Kubel or Delmon Young if the team appears to be out of contention this year.
They need to really think hard on this. Cuddyer and Kubel in particular are fan favorites with the kind of character that reflects the values and philosophy of Gardenhire and Bill Smith. Getting rid of either one for some unknown quantity of minor leaguers would rip the guts out of this club. This year has been particularly snakebit in terms of injuries. No need to panic or reinvent the wheel. Ben Revere has made Young expendible, and letting him go would be ok.
Next year I see Jim Thome gone. That gives you a starting outfield of Revere, Span and Cuddyer. Mauer will be cut down to 50-60% catching starts. You alternate Cuddyer, Kubel and Mauer at DH, with Kubel as the primary. Cuddyer can also spell Justin Morneau at 1b, and Mauer should also be taught that position for his non-catching starts, given Morneau's unknown future health status. Valencia, Nishioka, Casilla, Tolbert and Hughes give you a very decent (and young) infield. Altogether this gives you a pretty solid group of position players, with the major issue being the loss of bat production when Mauer is not catching and light-hitting backups filling in for him.
