In January, I wrote about low-cost mental-health counseling with interns for $25 an hour. Seeing an experienced psychologist or therapist in the Twin Cities usually costs $175 to $250 an hour without insurance, so many people forgo treatment if they lack coverage.

But at Edina Comfort Care (7300 France Av. S., Edina, 952-913-5403, www.edinacomfortcare.com), clients without insurance pay a flat fee of $50 an hour (although the office also accepts Blue Cross and Blue Shield). It's "mental health for the working class," said Karen Eckstrom, clinical director.

The staff of eight psychologists is made up of retirees and others with more than 25 years' experience each. Treatment specializations include depression, divorce, anxiety, parenting support, anger management, domestic violence, post-traumatic stress disorder, GLBT issues, life transitions, and grief and loss.

Appointments are 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily with no additional charge for evenings or weekends. Clients can usually get an appointment within 48 hours. Home visits for the disabled or elderly are offered at no additional charge. The initial phone consultation is free.
