Bizarre. What's going on with the economics of sports when you have to cut one of your best players in his prime because he makes too much money?

Recommend Packers GM Ted Thompson's desire to retain ILB A.J. Hawk has been rewarded, hours before the expiration of the NFL collective bargaining agreement Thursday night.

Mike McCartney, Hawk's agent, told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel on Thursday that the final touches were completed on a five-year deal. Hawk, who was released Wednesday, is expected to make roughly $6-$7 million per year with $10 million guaranteed, according to the newspaper.

Thompson noted yesterday: "With A.J., the business side of the game is driving this decision. We're hopeful that we can continue to work with A.J. to have him be a part of our team in the future."

Note to Wisconsin civil servants: collective bargaining ain't all it's cracked up to be. A.J. Hawk has a union and a CBA. And took a pay cut anyway...
