Understatement of the year: Glen Mason will not be coaching the Gophers in 2007.
Laurence Maroney sealed the deal with his comments in the Star Tribune this past week. This isn't to suggest Maroney has that kind of pull on the team (he did say he didn't think Mason should be fired), but there's going to be a massive negative fallout for Mason in recruiting if the prize player of the Gophers during Mason's tenure had serious issues with him, and he went out of his way to list those in an article. There is too much negativity surrounding him, and it's time to make a change.
The question is, when does that chance occur, and who will replace him?
I suggest Pat Hill from Fresno State. And I think it will happen soon after the Gophers season ends, as it often does in college football. You have to have a coach in place immediately, considering (for some weird reason) there will be recruits already committed to the U who won't come if Mason isn't there. So they need to have someone in place right away to continue recruiting.
