Woodbury Bulletin:

Flocks of eager bargain hunters will storm the streets of Woodbury Thursday through Saturday of next week, hoping to score some deals at the Lions 34th Annual Garage Sale.

The event is the Woodbury Lions’ biggest fundraiser of the year with hundreds registering to participate and sell items in the citywide garage sale.

It’s intended to raise awareness of Lions projects, which include scholarship awards, help for the blind and hearing impaired, food shelf donations and charity contributions.

“The majority of our money stays in the community,” said Lions Vice President and garage sale committee member Chris Holthe.

More than 600 residences have registered for the garage sale. Though the number is less than last year’s, it’s still expected to attract thousands of people.

“We’ve got shoppers coming around from the five-state area,” he added.

A directory with all garage sale participants will be available next Wednesday starting at 5 p.m. at various convenience and grocery stores in Woodbury. It will list what neighborhoods are part of it, who’s selling what and a map of where everything will be located.

Almost every Woodbury neighborhood will have residents participating, Holthe said, and items this year vary from big to small.

“Everything from cars and boats to household knickknacks, a lot of baby clothes, you name it,” he said.

This year’s garage sale has been extended to three days as opposed to the traditional two to give people more time to shop.

Holthe said in previous years the majority of sales were already open Thursdays, so the day was officially added this year to eliminate confusion.

But things usually start to wind down by Saturday afternoon and shoppers are encouraged to arrive early, Holthe said.

Some nonprofits, schools and churches have registered to raise money for their own organizations.

The Math and Science Academy National Honor Society is hosting one of the sales on May 12 to May 13. The group is asking for items to help raise funds for NHS.

Anyone willing to donate is asked to bring items to the school Tuesday and Wednesday, May 10 to May 11 after school between 2 and 2:30 p.m.

Others, however, are expected to hold sales though they did not register with the Lions or pay the fees.

“It’s been a challenge, there is no question about it. People are free to do what they do,” he said, adding that the Lions try to raise awareness of what they do for the community during the event.

The 34th Annual Woodbury Lions Garage Sale is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday May 12 to May 14.
