Article shows that extended warranty plans rarely justify their cost, and buyers are better saving up their own money for repairs in most cases.

Not to mention the fact that some extended warranties weasle out of doing their job when the time comes to pay up.

We have a maytag dishwasher and bought the maytag "dependability plus" extended warranty with it. After several repairs for the same problem - one the repairman said he sees all the time - the company said we had exceeded the pay-out limit and they would not cover anything more. Then to add insult to injury, they keep mailing us requests would we like to re-up.

The "plus" in dependability plus must be plus to their bottom line.

We're not going to buy anything from Jenn-Air/KitchenAid/Maytag/Whirlpool ever again.

A better way to go is to buy the appliance warranties from your utility company. Nice to have one number to call for a variety of item repairs, and to know it will get fixed as long as you keep paying the monthly fees.
